RE: Super C? Why?

My reasons for the Kodiak based Seneca 34SS were for many of the commercial truck simple points you made. The way the 2 of use it is for 7-10 days every 4-6 weeks. I work at the computer on business days and enjoy the different locations when not. This is our first RV and it is perfect for how we use it and there is more storage space both in and out than we can fill. But, based on 2 1/2 years of experience this is not what I would want as a full timer. That would require something 40'+ with washer/dryer, 4 slides, 500hp and I would be happy. It is a tuff decision to make with all of the choices. Wish you happy hunting.

RE: Looking at buying a Class C built on a Duramax chassis.

Being new to the RV world we spent 2 years looking from the first time we saw a Kodiak based model. We went to a few shows and visited several dealers and our choice was the Jayco product. To our untrained eye we liked the materials, fit and finish of the inside. Also the way the body around the cab overhang was radiused rather than squared off looked better. Then when the local dealer would not give us a straight answer to the simple question of, "How much?" we drove 400 miles to take delivery from a dealer who had the right answers. Two years and 25,000 miles later the decision to go with the 34SS would be the same. Happy hunting.

RE: Super C Advantages

The all go from place to place. They all will keep you out of the rain and tow something. And they all cost between $100,000 and $1,000,000. Your budget consideration will narrow the choices greatly. The right decision depends on your personal preference. From the driver’s seat a Kodiak based Super C doesn’t feel much different than my full size Ford van. Sit behind the wheel of a Class 7/8 truck conversion and you turn into C.W. McCall singing a couple of verses of Convoy. Now that’s a big truck feel. In a DP I can’t get away from the feel that I am in a Lazy Boy chair sitting in the corner of my family room looking out of the picture window. The DP ergonomics of the peddle and wheel positions make me want to ask Ralph Kramden for my bus driver's hat back. On the inside of most Super C's you have a Class A feel but you have to like the floor plan and amenities as offered with few changes in the low end of the budget scale. The higher priced truck conversion rigs are able to build to suit based on your wants.
Since I get the motor and she gets the home we went with a medium duty commercial truck based rig needing no special care and feeding requirements. How does it drive? Well folks, it’s a truck built to be driven and doesn’t care if it is a flatbed tow truck, delivering lumber or has a 1 bedroom condo on the back. It may not have 10 airbags but the suspension, running gear and ABS disk brakes are all something I can understand. After 18 months of looking and 2 years of use it works well for us and may be the exact wrong choice for you. With all of the choices available there is something just right for you.
Happy hunting.

RE: any computer wiz's?????

For 2 years prior to last June I used an AT&T PC card based air card. It was slow but worked in most places where I needed it for working out of the rig while on the road. After the 2 year contract expired I asked AT&T if they had the faster G3 cards available and was told no. I saw information about an air card from Mellinicon wireless broadband on one of these forums and gave them a try. No long term contract, month to month and you can cancel anytime. There is a onetime cost for the USB drive/antenna which I cannot remember but it could not have been much. The network does not use the AT&T cell network but one of the others and I have been able to maintain contact with the laptop in areas where I did not have AT&T call service. So far over 6 months I am please with the speed of service and ease of connecting all for around $60.00 per month with unlimited data transmission. Never once had to contact their tech support and the initial setup was so simple even I could do it. Only found it on the web at www.millenicom.com/mobilebroadband. Good luck as it works for me and the PC did not have to be reconfigured. Customer service 800 996-1285.

Dirty jobs, rv style, not if you paid me

I have come to the realization that there are jobs/duties we perform in, on and around an RV all in the name of fun and independence which we would not do if someone paid us. If someone came to my front door and said they would pay me $20 or $50 to hook up and dump sewer tanks, crawl around on the ground to chain down a car on a caddy or climb 12ft up a wet rear ladder and walk 30 feet against the wind to close a stuck vent cover I would kick them across the street. But no, since I got the RV I do all this and a whole lot more with a smile on my face and think how fortunate I am to have the privilege of experiencing all we do in the name of an RV lifestyle. There are only three things mentioned here but how many more jobs would be on your, “Not if you paid me” list?

RE: Boston Legal

Don't cry over missed Boston Legal episodes. Season's 1-4 are available on DVD and make a great stocking stuffer suggestion for Christmas. I have 1 & 2 in the rig but have not had the time to watch them all. It makes for great light entertainment.

RE: Travel and roads

If your question is about Hwy 20 east between I-5 at Williams and the junction with I-80 the answer is, "Go for it". Between Nevada City and I-80 the road has some twists but is generally wide and well maintained. I figured the driving time as no more on Hwy 20 than going the long way around through Sacramento on the interstates. A very pretty drive with little traffic and easy as we are 36' long with a toad.
Enjoy the ride.

RE: Casino Over Nighting Banned In Reno

Cashell also downplayed the threat of any lost revenue from an RV boycott, saying, "I'm not sure it wouldn't pay for a light bulb what might not come back."
I thing Mayor Cashell has more to worry about than the RV dollar returning. Last weekend Boomtown was way less than 1/2 full when the last two years it was almost at capacity during the same Air Race weekend. There were fewer spectators in the pits and the crowd in the general admission section was less crowded. Perhaps it would be more appropriate for the Mayor to encourage the people with disposable income who have RV's to dispose of some of that money in Reno.

RE: Reno Air Races

I will be at Bomtown and plan on going to the races Sunday. I have room for 2 in the car so you are welcome to hitch a ride. I have been attending the races most years since 1969, great fun. I am there for the races so I go early and spend all of my time in the pits. For the casual observer the show is probably better seen from the stands where the announcing crew can be heard. There are places in close to park and a west way out of the parking area down by the pit exit which gets you to 395 without the wait.
See you there.

Olympic TV Coverage observation

I understand the investment CBS made to secure broadcast rights to the Olympics. In order to maximize their return on investment the focus is to present an entertainment show in order to attract the largest audience of non sports enthusiasts as possible to watch the commercials. The show is presented to us in prime time using a “Live on tape” format allowing them to string out the viewing audience who may have an interest in a particular event as long as possible. All this after we already know the outcome of the event and only want to finally see it 12 hours later. Commercial free over the air/cable TV is not free since we spend our time waiting for the network to decide to show the event and by not giving us the courtesy of posting the exact time the events will be shown so we can pick and choose. The web may give us information in almost real time but is a poor substitute to the enjoyment of seeing the event on a big screen.
With the technology available I would pay for the ability to be my own director and have access to the live network feed for every event covered. We now have enough hard disk space for hundreds of hours of programs so give me the time and settings so my recorder can save the preliminary heats of dressage or early rounds of Greco Roman wrestling. Then I can watch the event I want when I want and not on their schedule. Maybe someday.

Olympic Medal Value observation

I enjoy the watching Olympics and the varied events deemed worthy of inclusion. I can appreciate the dedication of the athletes in the “Minor” sports which are not seen on national TV except during the 2 weeks every four years.
However, the importance given to the medal count gives credit to nations when it is the individual who in many cases have little or no connection to or support from that nation is way overdone. A silver medal swimmer born here, parents born here but competing for an eastern European country the grand parents came from. A basketball player born here with the same foreign connection. Track athletes educated here with US college scholarships where 6 or 7 in a field of 8 have Div 1 NCAA US national championships.
Finally I would like to see awards split into medals for competitive events and others for exhibition sports. If you race, jump, throw, sword fight, shoot arrows or air pistol or win a heads up match then that is a competition. If the event is decided by judges giving out subjective scores then it is an exhibition (Boxing is somewhere in between). This takes nothing away from the difficulty of the activity or unbelievable athleticism required to perform on thebalance beam or do an inward 3 ½ somersault, triple twisting, pike position dive off the 10 meter platform. But it is still a performance or exhibition and not a competition. Please, a world record in the 100/200m dash, 400m IM swim or a 50km walk gold isn’t quite equaled by one in the pommel horse or rhythmic gymnastics hoop event. There, now I feel better.

If there were anything to the story the National Inquirer their check book would have been there long ago at the first hint of a story and the finders would be rich. The "NI" has stringers all over just dying to break a story like this.

RE: Hill Climbs And Overheating?

With our ’06 34SS we pull a PT Cruiser on a dolly and the most I have seen the water temp needle move was about 2 needle widths to the right. That was when it was over 100 and under full throttle climbing east on I-40 for a few miles in AZ. The gage never moved higher than that going up the 12+ mile Baker grade on I-15 to Vegas when the World’s Largest Thermometer read 96 in Baker. It never even moved that far going south at mid day up the I-5 Grapevine, again, foot on the floor all the way to the top. Once over the top the needle dropped back to where it always is just left of straight up. I asked the Chevy truck service shop about the trans temp gage thinking it was not working since it did not come up off the bottom peg during my first 400 mile trip. He said the gage is working and trans temp would not heat up much unless I was pulling something really heavy up a big hill. I have noticed the needle move off the peg a little on the Baker grade and Grapevine but only a very little. This is with 20K miles mostly in the west, LA, Denver, Salt Lake, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, lots of up and down with no temperature problems. Use this as a sampling of one happy truck owner.

RE: rest stops between Los Angeles and Vegas

There are 2 rest stops listed on I-15 between Barstow and State Line but only one is open. The stop that is 35 miles north of the I-15/40 split is open but the one just beyond the top of the Baker grade has been undergoing renovation for a very long time. It was still closed in April the last time we went through there.

RE: Picking up a new 2009 Jayco Seneca HD 34SS in Des Moines, IA

Don’t worry about the heat during your drive home. For the two of us the dash air of the 34SS is more than enough to cool the front. For 2 days at 105+ during our hottest trip last Aug to Kansas we never turned the fan speed above 1 and most of the time the cold knob was up off the coldest setting. I did turn the fan up to 2 and aimed the vents to the center when DW was doing a 1000 piece puzzle on the dinette. Never needed the roof air while in motion but it works well on the gen at a rest stop for lunch. Since the front AC is ducted to the back we close the door to the front and enjoy a cool bedroom without the noise from the bedroom AC. It hurts to sit here with it parked waiting patiently until our next trip.
Also, don't worry about the effect of hot weather on the motor. We pull a small car on a dolly and the most I have seen the water temp needle move was about 2 needle widths to the right. That was when it was over 100 and under full throttle climbing east on I-40 for a few miles in AZ. It never even moved that far going south at mid day up the I-5 grapevine, again, foot on the floor all the way to the top.
Enjoy the drive.

The drive will be no problem on HWY 189 from Provo to Heber City. There was a new bridge built below the dam at Deer Creek State Park which eliminates the narrow section over the old dam. Enjoy the drive.

RE: GM's days of "Built in America" are numbered

I believe Miller was purchased in '02 by a South African brewer South African Breweries Plc and Coors merged with Molson of Canada a while ago. Then last fall SABMiller and Molson Coors got together as 50/50 partners. You can't tell the American brands without a program anymore. Coors is still brewed with rocky mountain spring water but the corporate parent is South African but based in London along with Montreal based Molson Coors. The combined stock should be listed listed on the NYSE shortly.

RE: SoCal to Denver Southern Route

Williams is a good choice as there are many RV parks available. We use Circle Pines KOA one exit east of town. Quiet with easy to use pull throughs. Then Las Vegas KOA on I-25 is about 5 miles south of town. Also quiet with friendly people. The distances are about the same for the 2 days of driving. Day 3 into Denver would be a little shorter. Hit the cruise control and relax while the miles go by.
The San Felipe casino/fuel/store mentioned above at mile 252 is nice and convenient and around 90 miles short of Las Vegas.

RE: Traveling Sales

Any job which can be accomplished with a computer on line and over the phone needs no fixed base from which to operate. As long as I have a cell phone signal and a WiFi or air card connection to the laptop my customers can contact me and I am in business. Home or on the road there is no difference. All the business should care about is if you are working for them and are making a profit. The exact location makes no difference.

RE: Pilots Will Like This

I was a student pilot doing touch and goes in a Cessna 150 at Long Beach in the early 70’s. Long Beach was where the wide body DC-10’s were assembled. As I was on short final to a runway that crossed the approach end of the runway the big guys use a DC-10 pulled up and this authoritative baritone voice came on the tower frequency saying he was ready for takeoff. Tower told him to hold short for arriving traffic and I about unscrewed my head looking for the traffic until it dawned on me that I was the arriving traffic. As I slid passed his nose for a pretty good landing I heard him key his mike but thankfully he allowed me to go on by as a brother with no smart comments. Great fun.
